Libraries nowadays provide access to information and resources. They serve as a source of knowledge and offer a community gathering space as well as silent or coworking spaces. The library in Samoa will not only incorporate all of the above, but will also function as a place of interaction and exchange for the community of Salani. As the cultural heritage in this place is very strong, the aspect of storytelling will play a major role.
Therefore the creation of spaces for public lectures (storytelling sessions) by local elders or experts about history, language etc. is desirable. To support this aspect, there will be a space for the display and preservation of local artifacts that will take the visitors back in time and make history more approachable for them. Additionally, historical archives containing historical documents will make the place not only attractive to tourists, but also entice researchers and academics. To include people of all ages, the space will promote interactive learning exhibitions and installations.
Other than that, the library will work as a host for workshops, such as cooking classes, crafts, music, dance and other traditional practices and creative arts. In relation to this, it can promote collaborations with local schools or organizations that can offer activities at the library.
The library is not only a place for for the day-activities of the community, but also attracts its visitors by offering night-activities (sports, concerts on the outside spaces or talks). Additionally, the roof of the structure opens up to the night sky and gives the central gathering space a special importance.
In conclusion, the library offers a place for the samoan community to come together and celebrate its heritage in many different ways.
